Pressing In - What To Do When We Feel Defeated

“Oh, that we might know the Lord! Let us press on to know him. He will respond to us as surely as the arrival of dawn or the coming of rains in early spring.” - Hosea 6:3

People often feel like they are not doing enough for the Lord.  They desire to have peace and clarity in their lives, but are stuck and paralyzed by indecision and apathy.  They want to feel close to the Lord which they interpret as feeling a sense of peace or happiness.

Jesus declared it is the Father’s will that He would not lose one believer. (John 6:39 NLT). Our salvation is dependent upon the perfect sacrifice of Jesus and our faith in Him.  No matter what storms and waves of emotions we go through, the surety of our relationship with Him is not lost because He won’t let it.

The yearning we have for more of God is a result of how we are designed. As citizens of Heaven, our souls yearn to know the Lord. It does not sit well in our being to be indifferent or casual with the Savior. Just as a marriage does not feel exciting and fresh when there is a lack of engagement, a lack of seeking the Lord leads to unfulfillment.

The prophet Hosea felt this distance and cried out, “Oh, that we might know the Lord! Let us press on to know him." To enjoy the Lord is to know Him and to diligently seek after Him. When we know that we are kept by the Lord, there is freedom and excitement in pursuing Him because "He will respond to us as surely as the arrival of dawn or the coming of rains in early spring.”  But, if we are caught in a loop of trying to earn His approval before pressing in, only striving and confusion will follow.

As the prophet implored the children of Israel who were broken and hopeless, let us press on to know Him. We know this is the Lord’s desire for us and we know that He hears us when we pray for this. (1 John 5:14-15) The rising of the morning sun is a daily reminder that our Heavenly Father hears us and will respond to us.  With this assurance, let us lean in each day to know Him in every season of life.
